The LIFE programme will provide the means for the setting up and monitoring of a series of pilot demonstration areas within Wales, Spain and Ireland over a three-year time period. However, it has been agreed by the project collaborators that the demonstration plots will be maintained, managed and monitored for at least the next ten years. The project can be subdivided into a number of phases with the first year predominantly spent at Penrhyn Quarry. In years 2 and 3, the studies at Penrhyn will continue and, in parallel, expert advice will be given to the Spanish and Irish partners as to the most appropriate, site specific restoration methods for these quarries:
Phase A: This will involve the final site preparation of the demonstration areas (80 % complete at present) and the detailed environmental/socio-economic surveying, assessment and mapping at Penrhyn Quarry. Planting stock will be acquired and propagated. The demonstration plots will then be set up, and treatments applied and plants transplanted to the sub-plots. Portable weather stations will be installed in each of the blocks.
Phase B: Undertaking of the monitoring program and resulting management action. Continued selection of plant material. Biodiversity monitoring.
Phase C: Based on the initial Penrhyn results and survey data from the other sites, restoration plots will be set up at the Spanish and Irish quarries and site specific restoration advice given. The success of these additional restoration plots will be monitored as for the Penrhyn Quarry site.
Phase D: Dissemination of the results.
Phase E: Implementation of the results to restore the remainder of the Penrhyn Quarry and other sites (e.g. the Blaenau Ffestiniog site recently acquired by McAlpine Slate which they are also committed to remediating).

6.3 Subdivision of tasks between partners
The tasks have been defined in 14 small units each allocated to one or more of the partnership teams. The on-site tasks have been clearly assigned to particular areas and management lines as indicated in Figure 1 and the Task Summary Tables in the next section.
Undertaken by: Institute of Environmental Science
Objective:
The efficient management and co-ordination of partners to ensure task completion remains on schedule and within planning prescriptions. In addition, rigorous feedback and monitoring will be maintained throughout the project.
Task Co-ordinator: Professor Mark Baird, IES
Method and rationale:
Implementation of a communication and financial flow structure to manage fund allocation together with feedback co-ordination and collation of current position with regard to programme and task completion. This will be performed in advance of quarterly meetings and end of programme reporting. IESs role includes consultation with the Task Co-ordinators, experts, quarry staff, field operatives and technicians.
Proposed start date: September, 1999 Estimated duration: 36 months
Task Deliverables &/or Events:
Tasks completed to deadline and overall objectives achieved, as demonstrated in dissemination material.
Timetable of reporting (subject to start date):
On request re-task/trial progression and quarterly plus end of programme reports.

Objective: Promote findings at a local, national and international level.
Task Co-ordinator: Professor Mark Baird, IES
Associated experts: All partners.
Method and rationale:
The production of quarterly reports will facilitate improved co-ordination and communication with local community and interested bodies. At the end of the project, a "best practice" manual entitled "The sustainable restoration and recreation of high biodiversity habitats on post-industrial derelict land" will be produced, together with a WWW report. The manual will be circulated to, and seminars held at, all of the participating partners for future planning and training purposes. In addition, Gwynedd Council have expressed a keen interest in helping to promote this manual to the owners of similar sites in the area as well as through its contacts at other UK local authorities and abroad. To facilitate these promotional tasks, hard copies of the manual will be freely distributed within the EU and available for a minimal cost to non-EU countries. In addition, local and national television and newspapers will be used to promote the work. We also aim to have at least two open days allowing the general public and local bodies to see the on-site work at first hand. We also intend to make available a video demonstrating the restoration techniques employed at the site and video recording the vegetational succession over the 3 year period.
Proposed start date: October, 1999 Estimated duration: 35 months
Task Deliverables &/or Events:
"Open Days" to publicise work to the general public.
Completion of hard copy and Internet version of "best practice" manual.
Dissemination of "best practice" manual to all partners and to Gwynedd Council.
Production of video recording vegetational succession at the sites.
Timetable of reporting (subject to start date): On request re-task/trial progression and quarterly plus end of programme reports.
